~85% of the homes we’ll need by 2050 are already built.

The average NatHERS star rating of an existing home ranges between 1.4-2.4* out of 10

The National Construction Code standard for new homes is 7*

These aren’t just star ratings, but an indication of the comfort, and the cost of heating and cooling for a home.

Improvements to houses, comfort levels and energy bills don’t need to have big up front costs. There are cost effective, simple strategies that can bring significant improvement:

  • airtightness (gap sealing), with consideration of fresh air management and moisture control

  • insulation, ceiling first and walls and subfloor if possible

  • heavy curtains with pelmets over windows

  • removal of gas and replacement with efficient electric appliances

NatHERS Existing Homes uses a tool developed by the CSIRO to generate a Thermal Performance star rating and a Whole of Home score out of 100.
